Modifiers are customization options that can be attached to an inventory item. If an item has a Modifier Template (a pre-configured list of modifier options) associated with it, the user will be prompted to make one or more selections depending on the type of modifier template being used. Single Select modifier templates only allow one selection per item. They are often used for things like size selection, or drink flavor selection. Multi-Select modifier templates allow multiple selections per item. They are often used for things like pizza topping selection.
Preparation
Before you can create a Modifier Template you must create each modifier option individually as an inventory item.
- From Manager Console, click Inventory.
- Double-click Item Maintenance.
- Create an inventory item for every possible modifier you want to be available as a selection during the sale of the main item.
- Common items created to be modifier selections include pizza toppings like pepperoni, sausage, or mushrooms and ice cream flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. You must create these as inventory items first or you will not be able to assign them as modifiers.
- When you have created all the items you will use as modifiers, create or select the main item you want to attach them to.
- This is the item that, when sold, will prompt the user to make a modifier selection, such as a "Make Your Own Pizza" item.
- Open the Modifiers tab.
Multi-Select Modifier Templates
Multi-Select modifier templates allow you to make more than one selection at the time of sale.
-
From the Modifiers tab of the main item, click Edit Multi-Select Templates.
Make sure you have clicked Edit to make changes to an existing item.
- Click Add.
-
Name your template by entering a Description, such as "Pizza Toppings."
Adjust the Master Pricing
The upper fields of Multi-Select Template Maintenance adjust settings that can be applied to every modifier selection, while the lower fields adjust the individual modifiers. Other than the Description, these fields are not mandatory and you only need to adjust them if you want to make Master Price adjustments or Allow Halves of modifier items.
The Master Pricingfields let you determine global settings for modifier pricing based on how many of a single type have been selected. Each individual modifier item in the Multi-Select Template can also have its price settings adjusted separately. The four Price Types for an individual modifier item are Regular, Use Master, Open Price, and Add to Master and they determine how or if its price is calculated in relation to its Selling Price and the Master Pricing. Read below to learn how each type interacts with Master Pricing.
- Regular: If a modifier item's price is set to Regular, it will sell the item at whatever price you enter in the Selling Price field for each instance of that modifier you add to an order. The only exception to this is if Force is selected in the Master Pricing, which is explained later.
- Use Master: This Price Type means the item will sell at the prices set in the Master Pricing. If the Master Pricing was set as follows: First Item Price: $0.25, Second Item Price: $0.50, Third Item Price: $0.75, and Additional Item Price: $1.00, an item with Use Master selected would add a cost to the order of $0.25 for the first of that type added, $0.50 for the second, $0.75 for the third, and $1.00 for any additional of that item. The Use Master type is useful if you have several items with the same sale value, so if you adjust the Master Price, all those with Use Master selected are also adjusted.
- Open Price: Selecting this lets you enter a price for the modifier at the time of sale. The only exception to this is if Force is selected in the Master Pricing, which is explained later.
- Add to Master: This Price Type uses the Master Pricing as described above and adds an additional cost based on the value in the Selling Price field. This is useful for modifiers that will always be a certain amount more expensive than other items, so when you adjust the Master Pricing, items with Add to Master selected will also be adjusted, but have the same additional fee associated with them.
- Force: This is a checkbox next to the First, Second, and Third Item Price in the Master Pricing. Selecting this affects the pricing of Regular, and Open Price modifiers. The price of items with those types will be forced to use any Master Prices that have Force selected. Open Price modifiers will still prompt for a value upon sale, but what you enter will be overridden by the Master Pricing. For example, if you had a First Item Price of $0.25 and Force was selected for only that field, an Open Price item would prompt for a value at the time of sale, but if it was the first of that type on the order, that would be overridden and the item would cost $0.25. Unless Force was selected for any other of the Master Prices, any more of that same item would cost whatever open price value you enter.
Add the Modifier Items
The items you created in the Preparation section of this document must all be added to buttons in the template in order to be available for selection at the time of sale.
- Click an empty button.
- Search for or select the Inventory item you created as one of the modifiers.
- You can restrict your selection of inventory items to only certain types by selecting one from the Item Types field.
- To change the number of items added to the order with each modifier button click, enter a Quantity.
- The value in the Quantity field will add that number of the modifier item to the order each time you select it, but Master Pricing still only applies to every time you click to select the item. For example, if you have Use Master selected, and a Quantity of 2, if the First Item Price is $1.00 and the Second Item Price is $2.00, clicking this modifier at the time of sale will add 2 units of that item to the order, but will only add a cost of $1.00. If you click it again, two more units will be added and the price will be $2.00.
- To have the button display text different from the inventory item name, enter a new description in the Button Text field.
- Design the button by adding colors, a font, an image and/or aligning the text and/or image as necessary.
- To clear all settings, including the inventory item, from a button, click Clear Button.
- To copy the visual elements of the button, click Copy Format.
- You can apply these visual elements to any button by selecting one and then clicking Paste Format.
- Configure the pricing, as described above.
- If you will be using the button, verify Yes is selected in the Enabled field.
- Add additional modifier buttons as necessary.
- Click OK.
- Click Exit.
